Launched in the mid-1990s as the Action Without Borders organization’s web site, Idealist.org now has offices in New York City and Portland, Oregon, as well as in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
By 2009, one million users had registered with Idealist.org. Today, with links to over 70,000 non-profit and community organizations in over 180 countries, the site operates in English, French and Spanish.
A fabulous resource for anyone who wants to volunteer or find a job in the not-for-profit sector, you can search for thousands of positions around the world.
Anyone can post events, programs, resources and volunteer opportunities, though only organizations registered with Idealist.org can post jobs.
Signing On with Idealist.org
It’s easy. On the Idealist.org home page, click Sign Up and either create an account or sign in using your Facebook, Google or Twitter account. Just provide some basic information about yourself: email address, city and country of origin, and you’re in. There is no fee to register.
Now you’re ready to search for jobs or add organizations and postings.
Whether you are looking for a salaried job with a not-for-profit organization, want to volunteer for a worthy cause or become an intern and get some experience, you’ll find thousands of relevant postings on Idealist.org.
Or, you can get involved in the nearly 2000 programs and events that are taking place worldwide.
You can search for three types of positions: Jobs, Volunteer Opportunities and Internships. When you select one of these, the site takes you to a new page where you can select the criteria to find the type of position you want, with each position type showing different search criteria.
Select the position you’re interested in. Each position supplies the poster’s address or email so you can send your application directly to them.
Registered users can post volunteer and intern positions, or programs and events.Only organizations can post paying jobs; however, they cannot post volunteer positions.
Log on to the site, and click the ADD YOUR ORG button. Complete the information and submit the form. Idealist.org screens organizations to ensure that they support its vision, and promises to get back in touch in one business day.
Click the "Post a Listing" button to create a posting. If you are posting a paying job and are a U.S-based organization, the following fee structure applies. You specify how long the listing stays on the site (60, 120 or 180 days).

Each job credit is equivalent to a job posting. Once purchased, a job pack never expires.
